Panevėžys continued their pre-season programme with a 2-0 home win over Latvian side FS Jelgava, making it a second victory against Virsliga opposition in this winter cycle.
The hosts started brightly, with Ernestas Burdzilauskas forcing an early header chance before Salomonas Kouadio tested the goalkeeper from distance. The opener arrived in the 14th minute when Oleksandras Kurcevas’ effort was saved, but Justinas Januševskis reacted first to turn in the rebound.
Kouadio remained a constant threat and went close again, while Edvinas Muratovičius created a good opening that the Ivorian was unable to convert. Jelgava’s best moment of the first half came late on, but a close-range header drifted wide.
After the break, Panevėžys were twice stretched at the back, with Arijus Bražinskas called upon to deal with danger. Attack was quieter, although Isaacas Asante attempted two long-range strikes and then provided the decisive delivery late on when, in the 89th minute Asante’s corner was met by Kouadio, whose header sealed the result.
