In the fourth round of the Tonybet Virslīga, FK Auda claimed an impressive 1-0 away victory over RFS, with 18-year-old Panamanian talent Josue Vergara once again stealing the spotlight.
The result marked RFS’ first defeat of the season, with Viktors Morozs’s side having been the last unbeaten team in the league heading into the match.
Auda started the game brightly, creating early problems for the hosts. In the 7th minute, Vergara had the first big chance of the match, but his effort drifted just wide of the post.
After a slightly shaky opening, RFS grew into the game despite the rainy conditions. Aleksander Filipovic and Gauthier Mankenda both had promising opportunities, but one effort was well blocked by a defender, while the other narrowly missed the target.
Vergara, however, made no mistake with his second opportunity. After winning the ball in midfield, Auda launched a quick counterattack. Frenchman Edvin Bongemba found Vergara in space, and the young forward produced a superb finish from just outside the penalty area, curling the ball into the right corner past Marko Maric to give Auda the lead. It was the third goal for Vergara this season, he also has two assists to his name in the opening four games.
RFS’ response before halftime was limited, with Jānis Ikaunieks testing goalkeeper Nils Toms Puriņš from distance, but without troubling him.
In the second half, RFS pushed hard for an equaliser. Morozs introduced additional attacking options, including Darko Lemajic, Mārtiņš Ķigurs, Cedric Kouadio and Roberts Savaļnieks, which helped shift the momentum in their favour.
The hosts created several dangerous moments, with Lemajic coming closest, but the Serbian striker failed to convert two good chances in quick succession.
Auda, meanwhile, dropped deeper and focused on protecting their lead, absorbing sustained pressure in the closing stages. Their defence held firm, and goalkeeper Puriņš produced a crucial save late on, denying Herdi Prenga’s header following a corner.
In the end, Auda held on to secure a valuable victory. Head coach Didier Zanetti’s side not only handed RFS their first defeat of the campaign but also ended a difficult run against the champions, having lost all four league meetings last season. It was Auda’s first league win over RFS since October 17, 2024.
Auda will now turn their attention to an away clash against FK Liepāja in four days’ time, while RFS will look to bounce back when they travel to face FK Jelgava on the same day.
