In a stunning Virslīga clash on Wednesday the reigning Latvian champions RFS suffered a rare stumble, falling 1–2 away to FK Liepāja in a fiercely contested battle that shook up the league standings. With this result, RFS slipped to second place, while Liepāja celebrated their first win over the Riga-based giants since November 2020.

The match came alive early as Liepāja striker Bruno Melnis sent a clear message to the champions in the 16th minute. The goal came after Djibril Gueye made a blistering run down the right flank and floated in a cross to an unmarked Melnis in the penalty box. Calm and composed, the young forward controlled the ball and smashed it past the keeper, giving the home side an early 1–0 lead — a cold shower for RFS.

RFS, known for their resilience, struck back midway through the first half. Mor Talla Gaye took matters into his own hands, creating space just outside the penalty area and curling a beautiful strike into the far corner, leaving no chance for the goalkeeper. The score was level at 1–1, and momentum seemed to swing in RFS’s favor as they began to dominate possession. Despite their growing control, the scoreboard remained unchanged at halftime.

Just seconds after the restart, the home fans were on their feet again.  Ede Oloko pressed high, dispossessing an RFS defender before launching a long-range rocket that soared into the back of the net – 2:1.

With 15 minutes to go, substitute Kyvon Leidsman nearly sealed the win after capitalizing on a defensive lapse by RFS. Goalkeeper Sergejs Vilkovs hesitated during a clearance, allowing Leidman to round him and fire from a tight angle. Just as the ball seemed destined to cross the line, Haruna Njie appeared from nowhere to make a heroic goal-line save.

Moments later, Liepāja had another golden opportunity, but Oloko’s effort from the center of the box was expertly denied by Vilkovs.

The final minutes saw RFS throwing everything forward in a frantic attempt to level the score. But Liepāja, disciplined and determined, stood firm and closed out a historic victory. The final whistle triggered celebrations across the stadium, as the hosts broke a nearly five-year drought against the capital’s footballing powerhouse. And the Swedish manager Andreas Alm got his first win under his belt as a FK Liepāja manager.
