Liepāja have stepped up preparations for the new Virsliga campaign, with midfielder Abiodun Ogunniyi insisting standards must be high from the first sessions back.
The 24-year-old returned from Nigeria after his winter break and said he kept active during the off-season, including informal games with friends, before rejoining the group in Liepāja’s snowy conditions. Having spent several seasons in Latvia, first with the now defunct Jūrmalas Spartaks and, most recently, with Auda, he added that the cold weather is no longer a distraction as the focus turns to fitness work and building rhythm with the ball.
Timi also pointed to veteran striker Dodo as a daily benchmark in training. The Brazilian’s intensity, he said, sets the tone in the dressing room and on the pitch, and makes it impossible for anyone to ease off during pre-season.
After arriving mid-season last year, Ogunniyi is aiming to force his way into a bigger role as competition for minutes increases. He believes the squad’s ambitions have grown after finishing third last season and says the early weeks of pre-season are key if Liepāja are to push higher in the table.
