In a fiercely contested race featuring Barthélemy Diedhiou (BFC Daugavpils), David Holoubek (FS Jelgava), and Krišjānis Zviedris (Riga FC), it was FK Auda’s captain, Abiodun Ogunniyi, who emerged victorious, earning the title of Player of the Month for April.
April was a strong month for FK Auda, who played five Virslīga matches, securing four wins and suffering just a single defeat. They triumphed at home over FK Liepāja, FK Grobiņa, and FK Tukums 2000, while also clinching a crucial away win against FK Metta. Their only stumble came on the road against BFC Daugavpils. Overall, Auda bagged an impressive 12 out of a possible 15 points for the month.
At the heart of it all was the 23-year-old Nigerian midfielder and team captain, Abiodun Ogunniyi. A consistent presence in Auda’s starting XI, Ogunniyi made his mark by netting two vital goals — the match-winner away at FK Metta and the opener in the home clash against FK Grobiņa.
Ogunniyi is no stranger to Latvian football fans, as this marks his sixth season in the Virslīga. Before joining FK Auda in 2022, he spent two seasons with Spartaks Jūrmala, where he tallied four goals and ten assists across 39 appearances. Since donning Auda’s colors, he’s continued to excel, contributing 13 goals and 10 assists in league play through the 2025 season.
The Player of the Month candidates are nominated by the Latvian Football Federation (LFF) Coaches Council alongside the Virslīga. This month’s shortlist featured:
- Renārs Varslavāns (FK Auda)
- Abiodun Ogunniyi (FK Auda)
- Barthélemy Diedhiou (BFC Daugavpils)
- Krišjānis Zviedris (Riga FC)
- David Holoubek (FS Jelgava)
Following the nominations, the winner was decided through a combination of votes from Latvian sports media representatives and fans on Facebook and Instagram. In the end, Ogunniyi’s commanding performances made him the clear choice for the prestigious award.
