After a 2-2 draw against FS Jelgava, RFS head coach Viktors Morozs had harsh words to say about his team, criticising some players for failure to take on responsibility and lack of leadership.

Many commentators had already awarded the 2025 title to RFS during the first lap of the season, when defending Champions built up a significant lead over then-struggling Riga FC. Following a loss to Metta during Matchday 5, a loss in the Big Riga Derby, and this day against Jelgava, this lead has now eroded to a single point.

Speaking after the dramatic game, where spectators had to wait 76 minutes for the first goal and where RFS came back to take the lead with two goals in two minutes only to concede a Jelgava equaliser in the 91st minute, Viktors Morozs expressed disappointment with the ongoing attitude issues of some of his players:

We started very poorly, not how we wanted or planned. A lot of what we are working on worked out as we planned, that’s why we had issues. I think we may have been marginally better than our opponents but we didn’t dominate. Jelgava are a well-organised team and we knew this and prepared for it, knowing full well that nobody here will just gift us the three points and we would need to fight for them. We did not do that, unfortunately. What happened in the closing minutes of the match only reinforced many of the things that we knew and are talking about within the squad – what it takes for a player to be able to fight for the gold and I think we should no longer be considered as some kind of favourites for the title. We only have a few players who have what it takes to take on the weight of responsibility that is needed. Some may think that it’s only football but you have to give it all to get a result in every match. I’m not even talking about the Championship as I see that we are far behind our best selves in terms of attitude that we need to have. This does not apply to all but I do see that we have a few players who are struggling and who are only willing to help but not to bear the responsibility. So, I think, we need to lift that weight off their shoulders.

RFS will next face BFC Daugavpils at home on the 9th of May at 19:00 local time while Jelgava are travelling to Riga to face the in-form Riga FC on the 10th May at 18:00.
