It was a round of contrasting outcomes in the Swedish Allsvenskan for Estonian internationals, as Matvei Igonen and Erko Jonne Tõugjas experienced very different results with their respective clubs on Monday evening.
Goalkeeper Igonen played a key role for Degerfors IF, who secured a 1-1 draw away against Örgryte IS in the fifth round of the season. The 29-year-old, who has started every league match so far, was particularly influential in the second half, producing several strong saves to protect his team’s lead.
However, his resistance was finally broken late in the match. In the 85th minute, with Degerfors holding a 1-0 advantage, the hosts were awarded a penalty. Igonen was unable to keep it out, and the game ended level. Despite the late setback, Degerfors have made a solid start to the campaign, collecting seven points from their opening five matches – already an improvement compared to last season’s struggles.
The situation is far more difficult for Halmstads BK and defender Tõugjas. The 22-year-old, who joined from FC Flora Tallinn during the winter transfer window, once again started and played the full match, but could not prevent a 0-2 defeat away to reigning champions Mjällby AIF.
Halmstad held firm for much of the match, but the decisive blow came in the second half, when Mjällby scored twice to secure the win. Tõugjas and his teammates continue to search for their first victory of the season, having collected just two points from five games, leaving them rooted at the bottom of the table.
Looking ahead, Degerfors will host BK Häcken on Saturday as they aim to build on their positive start, while Halmstad will try to finally break their winless run when they welcome IF Brommapojkarna next Monday.
