The only two Bundesliga fixtures on today’s matchday featured the clubs of Estonia national team leaders Karol Mets and Karl Hein, as St. Pauli and Werder Bremen continued their struggles in Germany’s top flight.

At the Millerntor-Stadion, St. Pauli hosted RB Leipzig, with Mets once again named in the starting lineup. The 32-year-old centre-back was aiming to help his side secure their first Bundesliga win of 2026, but that breakthrough remains elusive. A scoreless first half gave way to a tense second half, which saw Leipzig take the lead through 19-year-old Ivorian talent Yan Diomande, who netted his seventh league goal of the season.

Defeat appeared likely for the hosts until stoppage time drama shifted the narrative. Leipzig defender David Raum conceded a penalty, and St. Pauli striker Martijn Kaars calmly converted from the spot to earn a 1-1 draw and a valuable point.

Mets completed the full 90 minutes and delivered a commanding defensive display. He won nine of his 11 duels, recorded two interceptions, and made five clearances, once again underlining his importance at the back. Despite the draw, St. Pauli remain in the relegation zone, sitting 17th with 14 points in an 18-team league. Their next opportunity to claim a first win of the calendar year comes on Saturday away at Augsburg.

Meanwhile in Bremen, things continued to trend negatively for Werder. Werder Bremen suffered a 2-0 home defeat to Hoffenheim, extending their winless run to nine matches and marking a third loss in their last four league outings. Estonia goalkeeper Karl Hein once again watched from the bench.

The scoreline was harsh on Werder given the second-half dynamics. Hoffenheim were reduced to ten men following an early red card after the break, and Bremen dominated possession and territory thereafter. The hosts fired 22 shots in the second half alone, but only three found the target. Hoffenheim, by contrast, registered just three shots on goal across the entire match, yet two of them – one in each half – beat Germany U21 goalkeeper Mio Backhaus.

Werder’s last Bundesliga victory dates back to matchday 10 on November 7, and the prolonged slump has dragged them down to 15th place with 18 points from 19 matches, hovering just above the relegation places. Hein, who is on loan from Arsenal, has made two Bundesliga appearances this season, stepping in earlier in the campaign when Backhaus was sidelined through injury.

Werder Bremen will look to halt their slide on Saturday when they host Borussia Mönchengladbach.
