MFA Žalgiris will take on reigning champions Gintra away from home in the third round of the Lithuanian Women’s A League on Saturday, the 28th of March.
The Vilnius side opened their league campaign with a 4-0 win against Kauno rajono FA, with Olamide Adugbe Sandra scoring twice and Bunmi Elizabeth David and Erika Šupelytė also on target. Gintra have made an equally strong start, beating FA Šiauliai 3-0 before a 2-0 victory over TransINVEST. Khrystyna Pereviznyk has scored three of Gintra’s five goals so far this season, while Lidiane Ribeiro and Justina Blaževičkiūtė have one each.
In an interview to club media, Bunmi Elizabeth David said MFA were pleased with their opening display. “I think the first match certainly did not disappoint. We had the initiative, controlled the ball, scored a number of goals and defended with great confidence, without giving our opponents any chances to score. I’m happy that I managed to get on the scoresheet too, but the whole team deserved praise,” she said.
Gintra have won 24 Lithuanian titles and have dominated the women’s game for more than a decade. Since 2013, MFA Žalgiris and Gintra met 48 times in the league, with Gintra winning 43 and the other five matches ending in draws. Last season MFA Žalgiris lost all four league meetings, but beat Gintra 2-1 in the Baltic Women’s League semi-final.
Saturday’s match at Gytariai Stadium in Šiauliai is scheduled to kick off at 17:00.
