The winless run in the Bundesliga continues for the clubs represented by two Estonia national team players. Karol Mets and his St. Pauli side were defeated away by Augsburg, while goalkeeper Karl Hein watched from the bench as Werder Bremen salvaged a late draw at home against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Central defender Karol Mets once again started in the St. Pauli lineup as the experienced backline leader looked to help his team secure their first victory of 2026. The task was a difficult one away at Augsburg, who had caught the attention of German football the previous week with a surprise away win over Bayern Munich.

St. Pauli made a promising start and took the lead in the 32nd minute when Luxembourg international Danel Sinani converted a penalty kick. However, the visitors’ advantage was short-lived, as Augsburg responded before the break to level the score.

The second half saw few attacking moments from the hosts, but Augsburg made the most of one of their limited chances. Austrian forward Michael Gregoritsch found the net, scoring his second goal of the match to put Augsburg ahead. St. Pauli pushed for an equalizer, hoping to repeat their previous round’s late point at home against RB Leipzig, but this time they were unable to change the outcome.

Mets completed another full 90 minutes. Since returning from injury in November, the 32-year-old has now played 14 Bundesliga matches this season. St. Pauli remain without a win in the new year and have now gone six consecutive league matches without victory. With 14 points from 20 games, the Hamburg side sits 17th in the league table. Their next challenge comes on Tuesday, when they travel to face Bayer Leverkusen in the quarterfinals of the DFB-Pokal.

Meanwhile, Werder Bremen extended an even longer Bundesliga winless run. In dramatic fashion, they scored in the final moments of stoppage time to secure a draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach at home. Despite the late goal, the result marked Werder’s 10th consecutive Bundesliga match without a win.

Between the posts for Werder was Germany U-21 international Mio Backhaus, who dealt successfully with one of two shots on target from the visitors. Karl Hein remained an unused substitute and has made two Bundesliga appearances so far this season.

Werder Bremen currently sit 15th in the table with 19 points. Their next league fixture comes next Sunday, when they travel to face Freiburg.
