Lithuanian A Lyga title contenders FC Hegelmann have officially announced the signing of national team midfielder Matijus Remeikis, who returns home after spending a year abroad.
The 22-year-old midfielder joined Botev Plovdiv of the Bulgarian top flight in 2024, following five successful seasons with FK Panevėžys. However, his time in Bulgaria never fully took off. Last season, Remeikis featured in 20 matches but accumulated just 388 minutes of playing time. Amid financial struggles at Botev, several first-team players departed the club this summer, with Remeikis becoming a free agent in early August.
Speaking after signing with the Kaunas-based side, Remeikis expressed gratitude and ambition:
“I’m thankful for the opportunity to join the Blue and Whites. Representing this club is not only about improving as a player but also about meeting new people, building connections, growing, learning, and helping the team reach its goals.
There was interest from other clubs, but I chose Hegelmann because I see how the club is developing and moving upwards. I believe this will be both a fun and valuable experience.”
The midfielder also reflected on his personal growth and future role:
“I’ve already gained some experience, but there is never enough when it comes to improving and learning new things. I hope to bring value to this team and help it fight for the gold this season. I see myself here as a strong, determined player who will battle for victories alongside my new teammates.”
Looking ahead to his A Lyga return and the much-anticipated Kaunas Derby, Remeikis was confident about his new side’s prospects:
“I only managed to follow the league occasionally while abroad, but I believe we have a real chance of winning the title this season. Of course, everything depends on the team itself.”
Before his Bulgarian adventure, Remeikis was a cornerstone of FK Panevėžys, making 74 appearances in Lithuania’s top flight and playing a pivotal role in the club’s remarkable 2023 championship-winning campaign.
On the international stage, Remeikis has already earned four caps for the Lithuanian senior national team, while also representing his country at every youth level.
