Estonia international Martin Vetkal is heading to the Netherlands, having signed a three-year contract with FC Dordrecht, a club competing in the Eerste Divisie, the second tier of Dutch football.

The 21-year-old midfielder has had a challenging few seasons. After developing in AS Roma’s academy, he moved to Swedish side Brommapojkarna last year in search of first-team football. But the breakthrough didn’t materialize — Vetkal made just five appearances and was last seen on the pitch in March.

Now, he’s looking for a fresh start at Dordrecht, a club that finished fifth last season and came close to promotion. He’s not the first Estonian to wear the club’s colors — national teammate Rocco Robert Shein previously spent 18 months there before moving to Norway’s Fredrikstad earlier this year.

Dordrecht’s general director Hans de Zeeuw expressed his excitement about the signing: “Despite his young age, Martin has already gained valuable experience in several countries and is a full international. We’re proud that he’s chosen FC Dordrecht and look forward to his contribution on the pitch.”

Vetkal left Estonia in 2020 to join Roma, but like many promising prospects, struggled to break into the senior squad. With limited opportunities in Sweden as well, this move represents a fresh chapter — and a chance to prove himself in a league known for developing young talent.

On the international stage, Vetkal has already earned 13 caps for Estonia, scoring once and providing one assist.

At Dordrecht, one of the oldest clubs in Dutch football history, he’ll be playing under notable leadership: Dirk Kuyt, former Liverpool star and Dutch international with over 100 caps, is set to manage the side this season. The new campaign kicks off on August 8
