Lithuania captain Justas Lasickas said the home side were left to regret missed opportunities after Sunday’s 0:2 defeat by Georgia, with Georges Mikautadze scoring both goals after the break. The result came despite what the hosts felt was a competitive display against strong opposition.
Lasickas praised the backing inside the Darius and Girėnas Stadium, but said fine margins decided the contest. He said it was disappointing not to give the supporters a win, adding that Lithuania had shown commitment and created enough situations to take something from the game. In his view, Lithuania were well prepared tactically for a side capable of playing with either a back four or a back five, and he felt the team remained solid defensively for long periods.
Gvidas Gineitis pointed to the first half as Lithuania’s best spell, saying the side played well and fashioned chances they could have converted, only to fall short in the decisive moments. He said Georgia’s greater quality was evident after the interval, when the visitors took control through two goals and closed out the match. Gineitis was named Lithuania’s best male footballer in the country’s 2025 awards.
It was also a special evening for forward Armandas Kučys, who returned to the national team at the Darius and Girėnas Stadium after a year away. Kučys said the anthem and the crowd made it a memorable occasion, though he admitted Lithuania lacked the ruthlessness to turn their openings into goals. He added that Georgia had not produced anything unexpected, with Lithuania having prepared for the visitors’ approach in detail, and described the defeat as a useful lesson ahead of the next fixture.
Lithuania are next due to face Latvia in the Baltic Cup semi-final in Kaunas on 6 June.
