The football community has been struck by sad news: a well-known figure in Lithuanian club football, Algimantas Breikštas, passed away yesterday. He was born in 1966.
Algimantas Breikštas was an active and influential member of Lithuania’s football community. He played a key role in the revival of FK Sūduva Marijampolė and became its first president. In 2001, together with like-minded colleagues, he founded the Lithuanian Children and Youth Football Association, which went on to organize national youth football championships. In 2003, he also contributed to the establishment of the Lithuanian Football Clubs Association and served as its first chairman of the board.
In 2001, Breikštas began supporting the Vilnius club “Šviesa”, which competed in Lithuania’s top divisionin 2003. A year later, in 2004, he founded “FC Vilnius”, a club that played in the A Lyga until 2007.
During its time, “FC Vilnius” featured several players who would go on to represent the Lithuanian national team, including Tadas Eliošius, Georgas Freidgeimas, Vytautas Lukša, Deivydas Matulevičius, Arvydas Novikovas, Mindaugas Panka, Marius Papšys, Ramūnas Radavičius, Eivinas Zagurskas, and Artūras Žulpa, among others. The club also hosted Brazilian footballers, including Paulinho, who later became a member of Brazil’s national team.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Algimantas Breikštas during this difficult time.
