FK Liepāja began their Tonybet Virslīga campaign with a 2-1 win over reigning champions Riga FC, scoring twice from the penalty spot. With the winning goal coming in the 90th minute.
The hosts started the game very aggresive and with a purpose 90 seconds in Daniila Patijčuks getting fouled in the penalty area by Orlando Galo as referee Andris Treimanis was there to see it first-hand and pointed to the penalty spot, which was converted by Dutch forward Kyvon Leidsman.
As the game went on Riga FC settled in a bit, creating some chances from the open play, but after Orlando Galo shot goalkeeper Danijel Petkovič stood tall saving the only shot on target in the first half from the champions.
In the second half Liepāja had a major chance to double the lead after a counter-attack, but Felipe Vieira could not beat Krišjānis Zviedris. Later in the half that did bite back the hosts, as after a corner kick Riga FC tied the game up. Reginaldo Ramires with a header noded the ball to the far post where substitute Paulo Eduardo as alone and he scored the game-tying goal making it 1-1.
After the goal the hosts got lively and were pressuring and going for the winner, which happened as after great through ball by substitute Abioudun Ogunniyi, Daniila Patijčuks got a clear corridor for a goal but he was holded by Emīls Birka and Patijčuks went down with Treimanis pointing to the penalty spot again.
This time Djibril Gueye stepped up to take it and comfortably scored the goal which ultimately was the game winning goal.
This was FK Liepāja first win against Riga FC in almost four years as it ended a champion 16 game unbeaten streak.
