The Lithuanian Football Federation (LFF) and Vilnius University (VU) have continued their long-running research project examining e-sports as a driver of international growth and innovation within sports organisations.

LFF esports head Edgaras Abromavičius and VU lecturer Dr. Antanas Ūsas met Major League Soccer representatives Christopher Blivin and Glenn Hyams in New York to discuss how esports could be used as a strategic platform for future cross-border initiatives.

The federation said the talks underlined a shift in how e-sports is viewed within football, moving beyond an add-on to traditional sport and towards a route to new global partnerships and international opportunities. The meeting also focused on how e-sports can be applied in education, engage young people and broaden interest in football.

LFF and VU said they will continue the research and maintain dialogue with international partners as they look to strengthen links between football and the e-sports ecosystem through long-term, innovation-led cooperation.

VU is not the only institution in Lithuania that offers e-sports on their curriculum, with a number of colleges also collaborating with LFF to deliver these programmes in curricular or extra-curricular format.

Vilnius University, founded in 1579, is one of the oldest and most prominent higher education institutions in Central and Eastern Europe and is the leading University in Lithuania.
