Latvian goalkeeper Leonards Čevers has officially been unveiled as the latest addition to Italian Serie C side Salernitana, signing a two-year contract with the option to extend for a further season.

The 20-year-old shot-stopper has spent the past two years in Italy, steadily building his reputation. In the summer of 2023, he joined Serie D club San Marzano, where he enjoyed an impressive campaign, keeping ten clean sheets in 29 league appearances. Last season, Čevers moved to fellow Serie D outfit Virtus Francavilla, once again establishing himself as the first-choice goalkeeper with 27 league appearances.

Earlier this summer, Čevers became a free agent and was invited to Salernitana. After proving himself during trials, the deal was finalized yesterday following minor legal hurdles.

Salernitana, who as recently as two years ago were competing in Serie A, were relegated from Serie B last season. Now in Serie C, the club has started their campaign strongly, winning both of their opening matches. Čevers will have to compete for a spot in goal with Antonio Donnarumma, the elder brother of Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

A product of FK Tukums 2000’s academy, Čevers made his senior debut in Latvia’s Virslīga, appearing in four matches across the 2022 and 2023 seasons. On the international stage, he has represented Latvia’s youth national teams, featuring six times for the U-19 side.
