Latvian Super Cup to be played in Turkey

The Latvian Football Federation (LFF) has confirmed that this year’s Super Cup match between Riga FC and FK Auda will be played in Turkey, citing severe weather conditions in Latvia and unfavourable forecasts for the coming weeks.

Following discussions with both clubs, the federation decided that the traditional season curtain-raiser will take place at the venue of the teams’ pre-season training camps in Antalya. As both Riga FC and FK Auda are currently holding their training camps in Turkey, staging the match there became a practical and viable solution. The game is scheduled for February 17 at the Mardan Sports Complex, with a live broadcast provided for supporters in Latvia.

The Super Cup had originally been planned for late February in Rīga. However, prolonged freezing temperatures and related organisational risks made hosting a match of this scale in Latvia at this time highly complicated.

“Super Cup is a tradition we want to honour with high-quality, entertaining football,” said LFF General Secretary Artūrs Gaidels. “While preparing for the match, the extended frost made it clear that both the quality of play and the overall experience for supporters could be affected. After evaluating the situation together with the clubs, we concluded that holding the match abroad was the best possible solution. Fans will have access to a quality live broadcast, and in a way this will be a historic occasion – the first official LFF competition played outside Latvia. Our main objective remains unchanged: to deliver high-quality football and a worthy opening to the season.”

Riga FC enter the match as reigning Tonybet Virslīga champions, while FK Auda qualified as Latvian Cup winners after defeating Riga FC 2–1 in last season’s final.

The Latvian Super Cup was previously played only once before its modern revival – in 2013, when Daugavpils Daugava lifted the trophy at home against Skonto. The competition was reintroduced in 2024 as the official opening of the domestic football season. Riga FC won the renewed edition in 2024 by defeating RFS, before RFS claimed revenge in the following year’s encounter.
