The Latvian national futsal team put in a spirited performance in the brand-new Komandu Sports Hall but ultimately suffered a 1-3 defeat to reigning giants Portugal national futsal team – former world champions and two-time European title holders.

With the UEFA Futsal Euro 2026 fast approaching in January – hosted jointly by Latvia, Lithuania and Slovenia – Latvia national futsal team are fine-tuning their preparations against some of the strongest teams in the world. Just a month ago, Latvia claimed tournament victory in Indonesia with wins over higher-ranked opponents, building confidence ahead of their Euro debut.

Facing the world’s No. 2 ranked side, Latvia started brightly. In the opening minutes, Miks Babris forced a strong save from the Portuguese keeper. But it was Portugal who struck first – in the 4th minute, Diogo Santos smashed home a beautifully worked corner with a powerful volley into the far corner.

Latvia responded quickly. Aggressive pressing from Edgars Tarakanovs forced a turnover deep in Portugal’s half, allowing Sergejs Motiļs to score his first-ever international goal and level the match.

Portugal, however, wasted no time regaining control. Afonso pounced on a rebound to make it 2-1, and in the 14th minute Edmilson Sá extended the lead with another crisp finish straight after a good play made after a corner.

In the second half, Latvia showed patience and composure, creating several dangerous chances but failing to convert. The match ended 1-3 – a solid performance against one of futsal’s elite nations.

The two sides will meet again on Tuesday in the second of the two friendlies, as Latvia continue their final build-up to the Euro draw, scheduled for October 25.
