Latvia’s U21 team played a 1-1 draw against Georgia at LNK Sports Park on Friday in the 2027 European Championship qualifiers.
In the last international break the Latvian U21 National team started their new Euro 2027 campaign with an away game against Germany where they lost 0:5. Today a new opponent awaited as in the LNK Sports Park the under-21 national team players got to host Georgians.
Throughout the match, Latvia limited Georgia’s attacking threats to just a few dangerous moments near their goal. In the first half, Gļebs Patika had a chance to make an impact on a fast counterattack, while early in the second half, a dangerous long-range effort from Gļebs Žaleiko followed by a corner created an opportunity for Ivans Patrikejevs, who could not convert.
Latvia eventually took the lead in the 59th minute. After a shot from Valerijs Lizunovs was mishandled by the Georgian goalkeeper, Patika reacted quickly to score his second goal for the U21 national team. However, Georgia equalized just two minutes later from a corner, leaving the score 1-1.
Latvia U21 head coach Jakub Dovalil praised his team’s performance:
“The result is quite good. The players showed great effort – running, fighting, and following tactical instructions. We had slightly more chances than Georgia, and what I really value is that we scored from open play rather than a set piece.”
“With a bit of luck, we could have won, as we created more chances, but a draw against a second-tier team like Georgia is still a solid result. Georgia has improved significantly over the past five or six years, having reached several European U21 finals. It’s a strong performance from us, and we hope to continue in the same way against Greece in the next match.”
