Latvia’s U-19 side suffered a 3-0 defeat by Denmark on Saturday in the second match of the UEFA European Championship qualifying Elite Round.
Denmark controlled much of the match from the outset, although Latvia created an early opening of their own in the 16th minute when Rūdolfs Kļavinskis met a cross from the right but shot straight at the goalkeeper. Two minutes later Denmark took the lead as centre-back Philip Søndergaard turned in a loose ball after a corner.
The Danes added two more goals after the break. Substitute Hjalte Boe Kling Rasmussen finished first time in the 61st minute after Denmark broke through the middle, before William Martin made it 3-0 eight minutes later with a long-range effort that beat Rodrigo Vītols.
Denmark finished with a clear statistical advantage, recording 19 shots to Latvia’s six, with five on target to one, and winning nine corners to two. Latvia made one change to the starting line-up from the 3-0 defeat by Czechia, with Ivans Struks coming into midfield.
The result leaves Latvia on zero points from two matches, with defeats by Czechia and Denmark ending any chance of avoiding last place in the group. Denmark and Belgium both have four points after two games, while Czechia have three. Latvia will complete their Elite Round campaign against Belgium on Tuesday, 31 March.
The Elite Round group is being played in Czechia, with Denmark, Belgium and hosts Czechia competing alongside Latvia for a place at the final tournament in Wales. Only the group winners will progress.
