Latvia women’s national team head coach Liene Vāciete has announced her squad for the opening matches of the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualification campaign against Slovakia and Finland.

The qualification tournament will also serve as the UEFA Women’s Nations League competition. Latvia have been drawn in a group alongside Portugal, Finland and Slovakia. For this training camp, the team will be without one of its key players, two-time Latvian Footballer of the Year Karlīna Miksone, who is sidelined through injury. Defenders Sofija Gergeležiu and Aleksandra Sofija Mairna are also unavailable.

The 23-player squad is made up of footballers from three domestic clubs – Riga FC Women, RFS Women and FS Metta – as well as players competing abroad in Sweden, Poland, the United States, England, Iceland and Italy.

Under Vāciete’s leadership, the national team will begin its training camp on 26 February, holding two days of training sessions in Riga. The first match is scheduled for 3 March away to Slovakia, followed four days later by another away fixture against Finland.

Latvia’s first home matches in the World Cup qualifying campaign are set for mid-April, when they will face Portugal and Finland.

As previously reported, Europe has been allocated 11 places at next year’s World Cup final tournament. Four direct qualification spots will go to the winners of the A League groups. Seven additional places will be decided through the play-off stage, while one further berth will be determined via an intercontinental play-off against a representative from another FIFA confederation.

From League B, the top three teams in each subgroup will advance to the qualification play-offs. The winners of the League B groups will be promoted to League A for the next qualification cycle. The fourth-placed teams in each League B subgroup, along with the two lowest-ranked third-placed teams (overall 27th and 28th in the rankings), will be relegated.

Last year, Latvia won their League C subgroup in the UEFA Women’s Nations League, earning promotion to the higher tier.
