The Latvian national team have discovered their potential opponents for the upcoming UEFA Nations League cycle, although their league placement will only be confirmed after March’s relegation play-off against Gibraltar.
Latvia must first overcome Gibraltar over two legs to secure their place in League C. If they succeed, they will join a group featuring several familiar opponents from recent years.
From Pot 1, Latvia could face Montenegro, a side they met three times between 2020 and 2021, with two matches ending in draws and Montenegro winning once. Another possible opponent is Armenia, whom Latvia faced in both the previous Nations League and European Championship qualification campaigns. In four meetings, Armenia won three times, while Latvia secured a victory in October 2023 at Skonto Stadium.
From Pot 3, Latvia avoided Belarus – a matchup that would have resulted in automatic forfeits due to national legislation prohibiting matches against teams representing aggressor states. Instead, Cyprus were drawn as potential opponents. Cyprus were the first team Latvia faced under current head coach Paolo Nicolato, with that friendly ending in a 1-1 draw.
Should Latvia fail to defeat Gibraltar, they would drop to League D. In that scenario, their potential opponents would be Andorra or the loser of the Malta vs Luxembourg play-off.
The 2026 Nations League group stage matches will be played between September and November.
