Latvia’s national team captain Kristers Tobers has sustained a serious knee injury and will miss the majority of the season, his Scottish Premiership club Aberdeen announced on Wednesday.
Just last weekend, Tobers had finally returned to action after four months on the sidelines, playing 61 minutes in Aberdeen’s 0-2 defeat against Motherwell.
In an official statement, the club confirmed that the 24-year-old defender faces a lengthy spell out of the game:
“The club’s medical staff are working closely with specialists to determine the full extent of the injury, but the early prognosis suggests that Kristers will miss a significant part of the season,” the announcement read.
Thanks to UEFA’s updated regulations allowing teams to replace long-term injured players in European competitions, Aberdeen have registered defender Alfie Dorrington, on loan from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, as Tobers’ replacement in the UEFA Conference League squad.
Aberdeen will kick off their Conference League phase stage campaign tonight, hosting Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk at Pittodrie.
