The Baltic Cup for Under-21 national teams got underway on Friday at LNK Sporta Parks in Rīga, where Latvia and Estonia played out a 1-1 draw in the opening match of the tournament.
The hosts made the perfect start, taking the lead in just the third minute. Following a corner kick and a prolonged scramble for possession near the penalty area, England-based winger Danni Aņisjko reacted quickest, showing composure inside the box before placing a low finish into the corner for his first goal at U-21 level.
Despite falling behind early, Estonia gradually grew into the match and began to enjoy more control. Their equaliser arrived in the 33rd minute after an excellent transition. August Wagner won several consecutive duels in midfield to keep possession alive before Stanislav Agaptšev carried the ball forward and delivered a perfectly weighted through pass for Mihhail Orlov. The Nõmme Kalju forward calmly finished past the goalkeeper to make it 1-1. It was already Orlov’s second goal for the Estonia U-21 side this year after also scoring against Switzerland in March.
The first half remained entertaining, with both teams creating chances and each side striking the woodwork once. Latvia held advantages in shots, corners and possession during periods of the game, but Estonia looked dangerous on the counterattack.
The second half became more physical, with several cautions issued as both teams searched for a winner. Latvia came close in the 67th minute when centre-back Alans Kangars cleared an Estonian effort off the goal line, while Aleksanjans threatened with a header ten minutes later. The match also saw U-21 debuts for Latvian players Helvijs Joksts and Artūrs Janovskis.
Estonia finished the stronger of the two sides and applied pressure during the closing stages, but neither team could find a decisive goal. With possession finishing almost perfectly balanced at 50-50, the draw was ultimately a fair reflection of an evenly contested encounter.
The Baltic Cup continues on Sunday when Estonia face Lithuania, while Latvia will conclude their campaign against Lithuania on 9 June in Taurage.
The last Baltic Cup for U-21 teams was held in Estonia in 2024, when Latvia successfully defended the trophy. After drawing both matches against Lithuania and Estonia, they secured the title through penalty shootouts.
