In the Toplyga Matchday 8 encounter Panevėžys got their first win under the new manager Toni Korkeakunnas as they beat TransINVEST 2-1, with the hosts missing a late penalty that could have salvaged a point.
The match started brightly, with both teams exchanging well-taken goals early on. Elivelto opened the scoring in the 12th minute, but just three minutes later Yehor Glushach responded with a superb free kick – his third goal of the season. Elivelto remained a constant threat and later struck the post with a left-footed effort.
Panevėžys regained the lead in the 35th minute after being awarded a penalty. Following a VAR review, the referee ruled that Mykola Musolitin had handled the ball after Elivelto’s shot, and Edvin Muratovič converted from the spot. Elivelto came close again before halftime, testing the defence with a sharp one-touch effort.
In the second half, both goalkeepers were called into action. Julius Virvilas made a couple of important saves, but Vytautas Černiauskas produced an even more impressive stop to deny Xabi Auzmendi. Panevėžys looked dangerous on the counterattack but were pushed back under late pressure from the hosts.
Drama unfolded in the closing minutes when a VAR review awarded TransINVEST a penalty after a foul by Miano Danilo van den Bos on Hideyasu Tanaka. Moments later, Panevėžys head coach Toni Korkeakunnas, making his debut, was shown a red card for dissent.
However, the decisive moment came in stoppage time. In the fourth added minute, Auzmendi stepped up from the spot but failed to hit the target, sending the ball wide and allowing Panevėžys to escape with all three points.
The victory lifts Panevėžys further up the table, with both sides now level on 11 points after eight rounds.
