In the Toplyga eighth round, defending champions FK Kauno Žalgiris continued their commanding start to the season, dismantling last year’s runners-up FC Hegelmann with a resounding 5-0 victory at the Darius and Girėnas Stadium.
The breakthrough came early – and it came as a gift. Just six minutes in, a careless pass from Rokas Bagdonavičius was intercepted by Damjan Pavlovič in a dangerous area. Falling as he played the ball forward, Pavlovič found Motiejus Burba, who made no mistake from close range scoring his second of the season.
Burba nearly doubled his tally soon after, this time meeting an Amine Benchaib delivery, but the woodwork came to Hegelmann’s rescue.
The visitors did have a moment of threat midway through the first half. Following a set-piece, Angel Puerto rose highest to meet the ball with a header, but Tomas Švedkauskas was equal to it, comfortably gathering the effort. From there, it was all Kauno Žalgiris.
In the 31st minute, a lightning-fast transition from defense turned into a second goal. Amine Benchaib once again played a key role, delivering the assist for Fabien Ourega, who doubled the lead. Moments later, Benchaib himself got on the scoresheet, finishing off another rapid attack to make it 3-0 before the break.
Any hopes of a comeback faded quickly after halftime. Leo Ribeiro struck the crossbar from a free kick early in the second half, while Franco Bardassarra tested Bagdonavičius, who managed to keep the scoreline from worsening momentarily. But the pressure kept building.
In the 58th minute, Motiejus Burba showed determination inside the box, challenging the goalkeeper and allowing Fabien Ourega to finish unchallenged for his second of the night. The rout was completed in the 88th minute, when substitute Dāvis Ikauniekas converted from close range after an excellent delivery by Joris Moutachy. The final whistle confirmed a statement victory.
With this emphatic win, Kauno Žalgiris sit comfortably at the top of the table with 22 points, while Hegelmann suffer only their second defeat of the season and remain on 8 points.
