The Lithuanian Super Cup final at the Marijampolė Football Arena not only marked history for FK Kauno Žalgiris, who lifted the trophy for the first time in the club’s history, but also ended with an incident that forced the evacuation of spectators.

As previously reported, Dāvis Ikaunieks’ goal secured a 1-0 victory for the defending Toplyga champions over FK Panevėžys in the 2026 season opener. The match successfully launched the new campaign, yet celebrations were quickly overshadowed by events in the stands.

Immediately after the final whistle, Kauno Žalgiris supporters celebrated the victory with flares. The pyrotechnics led to the spread of fire and heavy smoke in part of the indoor arena. According to sportas.lt, firefighters were called to the scene. Due to potential safety concerns, the Lithuanian Football Federation conducted the trophy ceremony rapidly, after which players, officials and spectators were instructed to leave the premises.

The incident has had direct consequences. According to the Lithuanian media the local side FK Sūduva will not be able to train in the Marijampolė arena this week due to smoke damage and must seek alternative arrangements ahead of the new Toplyga season. The venue is currently scheduled to host a first-round league match on 22 February between FC Hegelmann and FK Banga Gargždai.

The Lithuanian Football Federation is now awaiting an invoice related to the incident and the damage caused. Any financial penalties are expected to be forwarded to FK Kauno Žalgiris. The situation carries an additional layer of irony, as the reigning champions are themselves set to play their league home matches at the same Marijampolė arena while winter conditions prevent games from being held at Kaunas’ Darius and Girėnas Stadium.
