Mattias Käit has won the first league title of his career after Thun secured the Swiss Super League championship.
Founded in 1898, FC Thun, newly promoted to the league only this season, sensationally claimed their first major title after St Gallen’s defeat left them with a secure 11-point lead at the top of Swiss table. The club had led the league for most of the season but faced setbacks in their final games.
The local council of Thun had prepared for this moment, approving all-night festivities, with fans set to celebrate in Rathausplatz as they eagerly await the team’s triumphant return, led by manager Mauro Lustrinelli.
The Estonia midfielder is the 27th Estonian footballer to be crowned a champion abroad, joining a list that spans 18 different countries. Switzerland is not new ground for Estonia’s title-winners, with defender Karol Mets previously lifting the Swiss league crown with Zürich in 2022.
Artur Pikk remains the only Estonian to have collected championships in two different countries, winning titles in Belarus in 2016 and Latvia in 2021 with RFS.
Three Estonian players celebrated league success abroad last year: Vlada Kubassova won the Hungarian title with Ferencváros, Mattias Männilaan became champions in Gibraltar with Lincoln Red Imps, and Alex Matthias Tamm lifted the Slovenian championship with Olimpija Ljubljana.
In 2026, Käit has added his name to that roll of honour and more could follow. Kubassova’s Ferencváros are also in contention for another domestic double, while Estonia international Katrin Kirpu’s club Agram remain in the Croatian title race.
