Latvijas Virslīga returned from the international break with a Round 33 clash between FS Jelgava and BFC Daugavpils that ended in a 0-0 stalemate, with both sides taking a point.
Heading into this match, Daugavpils were battling for a place in European competitions, while Jelgava were looking to edge closer to securing their top-flight status for next season. Previous meetings between the two sides this season had all been won by the home team – Jelgava claimed a 4-1 victory early in the campaign, while Daugavpils answered with 1-0 and 2-0 wins in the following encounters.
Daugavpils entered the break on a high after a key 1-0 win over FK Auda, one of their direct rivals in the European race. Jelgava, meanwhile, were left frustrated after letting a lead slip in a 1-1 draw against SK Super Nova.
Jelgava head coach Aleksandrs Basovs made three changes to his starting lineup. Ondrej Ullman returned after suspension, while Gļebs Žaleiko was also back in the XI. Additionally, 18-year-old defender Ādams Dreimanis made his first start of the season, marking just his third league appearance this year.
On the visitors’ side, Kirils Kurbatovs made two adjustments. Gļebs Mihaļcovs earned a start following strong performances for the U21 national team, while English defender Wasiri Williams returned after missing two matches.
The first half offered little in terms of clear chances. Daugavpils came closest in the 13th minute when Jevgēņijs Miņins whipped in a cross that was met by a powerful header, but Czech U20 goalkeeper Adam Dvořák produced a strong save. Jelgava responded through Filip Hašek’s driving run, though it didn’t result in a shot on target.
Both sides increased their attacking efforts after the break, but neither managed to find the decisive touch. For the first time this season, Jelgava and Daugavpils shared the points in a 0-0 draw.
With this result, Daugavpils extend their lead over Auda to three points and remain in fourth place at least until the next round. Jelgava hold firm in sixth.
Next Saturday, Jelgava will travel to face FK Liepāja, while Daugavpils will host SK Super Nova on the same day.
