Last season vice-champions FC RFS began the 2026 Tonybet Virsliga season with a 2-0 home win over debutants Ogre United, with Jānis Ikaunieks scoring twice after the break.
The champions controlled the opening half, keeping Ogre pinned back for long spells and forcing goalkeeper Ņikita Parfjonovs into early action when he saved Stefan Panič’ header from Roberts Savaļnieks’ delivery. Ikaunieks later had a clear sight of goal from a central position, but his effort was gathered by Parfjonovs.
Ogre’s first threatening moment in the top flight came from a corner on 33 minutes, though it produced little, and their first dangerous shot and which ultimately was the only attempt at the goal was a Vadym Mashchenko direct free-kick that sailed over the crossbar.
RFS made the breakthrough soon after half-time on the counter-attack. Lasha Odisharia delivered from the right and Ikaunieks glanced a header in from a tight angle to register the season’s first Virsliga goal.
The game turned tense late on when RFS substitute Ismael Diomande was sent off for an elbow on Mārtiņš Lormanis. With no VAR available for the opener, referee Aleksejs Griščenko consulted his assistant before producing a straight red card.
Despite playing out stoppage time with 10 men, RFS sealed the points with an almost identical move. Odisharia after getinng past two Ogre United defenders again supplied the cross and Ikaunieks steered another header beyond Parfjonovs to make it 2-0.
RFS start the season with the win, with their next match coming next Saturday with an away match against FK Liepāja, while Ogre United will look for their first goal and first league points when they will host FK Tukums 2000 next Sunday.
