Hein ruled out for rest of club season after training injury

Estonia goalkeeper Karl Jakob Hein has told to Soccernet.ee that he is targeting a return for June’s Baltic Cup after a broken thumb brought his club season with Werder Bremen to an early end.

Hein suffered the injury in training three days before joining up with the national team. The 23-year-old said the damage came during a routine set-piece drill, when a slight shove moved him just enough out of position for the ball to strike his thumb instead of landing cleanly in his hands.

“We were working on set plays. I came for the ball and was pushed a little at the last moment,” Hein told Soccernet.ee. “My hand shifted two centimetres into an unfortunate position and, instead of catching it, the ball hit my thumb exactly. In that sense, the ball injured me, but that little push at the last moment moved my hand so that, instead of catching it with five fingers, I did it with one. And in the end, not even that.”

Hein’s loan spell in the Bundesliga has been a frustrating one. His move to Werder from Arsenal had initially raised hopes in Estonia, but he made only two appearances for the German club, both of them when academy goalkeeper Mio Backhaus was unavailable.

The international breaks had offered some relief, and Hein had been looking forward to rejoining Estonia for the March camp and the trip to Rwanda. Instead, his focus is now on recovery, with the Baltic Cup in June the next target and no intention to rush the process.
