After more than 24 hours after a shocking knife attack in Alytus, Lithuanian football has already received encouraging news – Dainava player Chinonso Jeremiah Obi has been discharged from hospital following a successful operation.
The young Nigerian footballer, who was seriously injured in the attack just a day earlier, was allowed to leave the hospital after undergoing surgery and initial treatment. Medical staff permitted Obi to continue his recovery under supervision.
Upon his return, Obi was met by his teammates, who welcomed him back with clear support and solidarity after the traumatic events.
Obi will now continue his rehabilitation in Alytus, following medical recommendations and under close care. While the recovery process will still require patience, the quick progress has brought a sense of relief across the Lithuanian football community.
In an official statement, FK Dainava expressed gratitude for the support shown since the incident.
“The club sincerely thanks everyone for their support and care – it is extremely important during this period and means a lot both to the player and to the whole team,” the statement said.
As reported yesterday, the attack took place ahead of the Lithuanian Pirma Lyga third-round fixture, as Alytus-based club Dainava prepared to travel and face Tauras Tauragė.
According to the Alytus County Police, the emergency call was received at 10:50 a.m., after witnesses who saw the attack alerted authorities. The incident occurred on Naujoji Street, in what has been described as a shocking act of violence in broad daylight. The suspect – a 2007-born individual was detained.
