# Goalless Žalgiris derby leaves Kauno Žalgiris one point away from league title
**Kauno Žalgiris moved to within one point of securing a second consecutive Lithuanian Toplyga title after playing out a goalless draw against Vilnius Žalgiris in the final Žalgiris derby of the season. The result ended the visitors’ mathematical hopes of winning the championship, leaving Sūduva as the only remaining challengers with two rounds to play.**

The stakes could hardly have been higher heading into the encounter. Victory for reigning champions Kauno Žalgiris would have secured the title with two matches remaining, while Vilnius Žalgiris needed all three points to keep their own championship ambitions alive.

The visitors nearly made a dream start, creating a dangerous opportunity just eight seconds after kick-off. Following a mistake by Yukiyoshi Karashima, Ukrainian striker Stanislav Bilenkyi found himself with space to shoot from distance, forcing goalkeeper Tomas Švedkauskas into an early save.

Vilnius Žalgiris continued to threaten during the opening exchanges, with Bilenkyi wasting another promising opportunity after meeting Klaudijus Upstas’ delivery from the right flank. Arriving at the far post, the Ukrainian failed to make clean contact with the ball, sending his effort wide.

Kauno Žalgiris gradually settled into the contest after their nervous start, although the visitors initially enjoyed more territory. The hosts registered their first shot on target in the 22nd minute when Karashima tried his luck from outside the penalty area, but goalkeeper Vincentas Šarkauskas gathered comfortably.

The reigning champions created their first major opportunity in the 36th minute. Following an excellent combination between Amine Benchaib and Anthony Kalik, the former found himself in a promising position inside the penalty area, only for Šarkauskas to produce an important save.

Kauno Žalgiris finished the first half strongly, enjoying longer spells of possession and winning several corners, but the visitors’ defence held firm to keep the score level at the interval.

Much like the opening half, the second period began with an early opportunity for Vilnius Žalgiris. Bryan Teixeira, who has been enjoying an impressive run of form, drove into the penalty area and created space for a right-footed effort. However, a slight deflection off a defender sent the ball wide for a corner.

The match’s biggest controversy arrived in the 53rd minute when referee initially awarded Vilnius Žalgiris a penalty after Matas Vareika went down inside the area following a challenge from Joris Moutachy.

Following a lengthy VAR review, the referee was called to the pitchside monitor and subsequently overturned the decision. Despite contact between the players, the officials determined that Vareika had initiated it, with the Vilnius midfielder instead receiving a yellow card for simulation.

Kauno Žalgiris head coach Željko Sopic responded by introducing Leo Ribeiro in place of Leon Krekovic on the hour mark, looking to inject fresh energy into his side’s attack. Vilnius Žalgiris manager Andrius Skerla also made changes shortly afterwards, bringing on Nemanja Mihajlovic and Martynas Šetkus.

The hosts began to create more opportunities as the second half progressed. Benchaib produced an excellent through ball to Gabriel Debeljuh, who used his strength to hold off a defender before shooting from a tight angle. However, Šarkauskas positioned himself well to make the save.

From the resulting corner, Vykintas Slivka found himself with a shooting opportunity, but his effort was blocked by the Vilnius defence.

Sopić continued searching for a breakthrough, introducing Gratas Sirgėdas and Brazilian forward Renan Oliveira. The latter had already delivered several decisive contributions in recent weeks, scoring against Brann in the UEFA Conference League and netting the winning goal against Sūduva in the previous league round.

Kauno Žalgiris came agonisingly close to taking the lead in the 74th minute. Karashima delivered a perfectly weighted pass to send Kalik through on goal, but Šarkauskas denied the Australian midfielder in a one-on-one situation.

The rebound flew high into the air, and Kalik managed to produce an acrobatic overhead kick despite pressure from the goalkeeper. However, Šarkauskas reacted brilliantly once again, stopping the second effort and gathering the ball.

Just two minutes later, Kalik squandered another excellent opportunity. Ribeiro delivered an accurate cross into the penalty area, finding the midfielder completely unmarked near the penalty spot. However, Kalik sent his first-time effort over the crossbar, leaving the Australian visibly frustrated.

With the clock ticking down, Kauno Žalgiris continued to push forward in search of the goal that would secure the championship, while Vilnius Žalgiris increasingly looked to exploit spaces on the counterattack.

The hosts created another promising opportunity in the 90th minute when Ribeiro delivered a dangerous cross towards Rokas Lekiatas. The defender arrived in front of goal but failed to make contact with his header, allowing Švedkauskas to collect the ball.

Vilnius Žalgiris also pushed for a late winner, knowing that only victory would keep their title hopes alive. A corner created a dangerous situation inside the Kaunas penalty area, but the resulting header flew well over the crossbar.

There was still time for one final opportunity at the opposite end. Kauno Žalgiris quickly launched an attack and won a dangerous set piece in the closing seconds. However, Slivka was unable to generate sufficient power on his header under pressure, and Šarkauskas gathered the ball before the final whistle confirmed a 0-0 draw.

The result leaves Kauno Žalgiris five points clear of second-placed Sūduva with two rounds remaining, meaning the reigning champions need just one point from their final two matches to secure a second consecutive Toplyga title.

Sūduva must win both remaining fixtures, at home against Banga and Džiugas Telšiai, while hoping Kauno Žalgiris lose both of their away matches against Hegelmann and TransINVEST. The penultimate round of the season will take place next Saturday.
