Latvia international goalkeeper Rihards Matrevics recorded his first clean sheet of the season in the Czech First League, helping Dukla Prague earn a goalless 0-0 draw away to Sigma Olomouc – home of Lithuania international winger Artur Dolžnikov.
Both Baltic internationals were named in the starting lineups. Matrevics was making just his second league appearance for Dukla, having conceded twice in a 0-2 debut loss to MFK Karviná. Meanwhile, Dolžnikov was looking to build on a strong performance in Sigma’s opening-day 1-0 win over Slovácko.
Olomouc, playing at home and considered pre-match favourites, seized early initiative. Matrevics was called into action in just the 2nd minute, calmly collecting a cross from Dolžnikov. Two minutes later, the Latvian made his first save, reacting well to parry a deceptive shot over the bar and conceding the first corner of the match.
Despite Sigma enjoying greater possession in the first half, Dukla Prague had the better chances. Dolžnikov looked lively on the left wing, frequently pushing the pace, drawing fouls, and even earning a yellow card from his marker. At the other end, Matrevics impressed with strong aerial presence and good footwork under pressure.
The second half began much like the first – Dolžnikov again tested the Dukla defence with a cross from the left, but this time Matrevics punched it clear. The Latvian had more to do as the half wore on, excelling in aerial duels and confidently commanding his area.
Olomouc finally registered a shot on target in the 78th minute when midfielder Simion Michez headed toward goal. Although not powerful, the effort was well-placed, but Matrevics saved comfortably. Shortly after, he picked up his first yellow card in the Czech top division for time-wasting.
Both teams struggled to create real danger late in the game, and the match ended in a 0-0 score. Dolžnikov, once again active and creative, was subbed off in the 68th minute. Matrevics, meanwhile, played the full 90 and secured a well-earned clean sheet.
Looking ahead, the Baltic representation will continue next weekend in another head-to-head matchup. Dolžnikov’s Sigma Olomouc host Raimonds Krollis and Slovan Liberec on Saturday, while Matrevics and Dukla Prague will search for their first win of the campaign at home against Baník Ostrava on Sunday.
