Estonian Saku Sporting were beaten 3-1 by Lithuanian giants FC Gintra in the Baltic Women’s Football League (BWFL), with Katriin Saulus scoring a stoppage-time penalty for the home team.
The Lithuanian side led at the break after an unusual opener on 31st minute, when Tamara Brown’s cross from a tight angle sailed over Saku’s goalkeeper Ksenija Jerofejeva and dropped into the net.
Gintra doubled their lead in the 67th minute as Krystyna Pereviznyk found a through ball to go one on one with the keeper. Finally, the visitors rounded off the score 3-0 on 86th minute as Agnieška Kazarina found space in the box and chipped the ball over the Jerofejeva.
Saku pulled one back in stoppage time when Katriin Saulus won a penalty and converted it in the first minute of added time to secure a late consolation.
Both teams had arrived into this fixture without a point from their opening fixtures: Saku had lost 5-0 to MFA Žalgiris, while Gintra were beaten 4-2 by RFS Women, making this their first win with the new head coach Artūr Sikorskij in charge.
The scorer of Saku’s lone goal, Katriin Saulus said the team struggled to settle in during the opening stages of the game. “We started quite shakily. There was a lot of technical error and a lot of individual mistakes. We were also too weak in duels,” she told the Soccernet TV in a post-match interview. She added that Gintra’s pressure forced hurried decisions in possession. “They were on top of us all the time. We have to stay calm, we rushed too much,” she said. “We won the ball, found one pass and then they were already long. We need to keep a cool head and build attacks for longer.”
