In Romania’s top flight, Edvinas Gertmonas’ Universitatea Cluj returned to winning ways with an emphatic 4-1 home victory over Csikszereda Ciuc.

Cluj had suffered a 2-3 away defeat to CFR Cluj in the previous round – the first time this season that both the club and the Lithuanian international goalkeeper conceded three goals in a single match. This time, however, they responded convincingly.

Although the hosts had an early scare when Csikszereda found the net, the goal was ruled out for offside following a VAR review. From that point on, Universitatea Cluj took control of the match, scoring four unanswered goals in the remainder of the first half to lay the foundations for a comfortable win.

The visitors managed to pull one back in the second half when a Hungarian forward Eppel headed home from close range. Gertmonas got a hand to the effort, but the power of the shot carried it over the line. Csikszereda were later awarded a penalty with a chance to further reduce the deficit, but the attempt sailed over the crossbar.

With the victory, Universitatea Cluj climbed to fourth place in the league standings, five points behind leaders Universitatea Craiova. Gertmonas, who saved four of the five shots on target he faced, made his 15th league appearance of the season and now has eight clean sheets to his name.

He will have the opportunity to record his ninth clean sheet on Friday, when Cluj travel to face FC Botoșani.
