FK Žalgiris has reinforced its defensive line with the signing of Nigerian defender Nelson Abiam, who has represented Nigeria’s second national team.

The 23-year-old player underwent a medical examination in Vilnius last week and officially signed a contract with the club this week. Prior to joining Žalgiris, Abiam played exclusively in his home country.

He began his professional career with ABS FC and made his debut in the Nigerian Premier League with Wikki Tourists, later featuring for Nasarawa United.

During the 2023–2024 season, Abiam played for Doma United, where he scored 5 goals in 27 appearances, making him the team’s top scorer despite being a defender.

Most recently, he represented Kano Pillars.

Abiam has also been regularly called up to Nigeria’s B national team, composed of players from the domestic league. The squad competes in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualification matches.

With his blend of defensive strength and attacking contribution, Žalgiris hopes Abiam will make a significant impact on the team’s backline in the upcoming season.
