FK Kauno Žalgiris have retained another key figure from their title-winning squad. On December 1, the club’s new contract with Aldayr Hernandez officially came into effect. The deal includes an option allowing the club to extend the player’s stay through the 2027 season.

“We began negotiations with Aldayr and his agents back in the spring. The player enjoys being in Kaunas and at the club, and we greatly value his exceptional professionalism and commitment in every match. Both sides sought a longer collaboration, and we finalized the contract during the summer. We’re delighted that the new agreement is now active and that we will enter our Champions League qualifying campaign with Aldayr in the squad,” said club director Eimantas Pūras.

The 30-year-old centre-back, who celebrated his milestone birthday this summer, joined Kauno Žalgiris for the 2024 season and quickly became one of the cornerstone figures in the team’s defensive setup.

“We’re happy to have kept one of the main pillars of our defensive line. With his reliable play, Alda significantly contributed to our strong defensive performances. While not everyone notices it, he is undoubtedly one of our leaders both on and off the pitch,” added head coach Eivinas Černiauskas.

Before moving to Kaunas, Hernandez played for Bogotá FC in his native Colombia, later represented Bekaa in Lebanon, and upon arriving in Europe competed in Finland for Turku TPS, Helsinki’s HIFK, and FC Honka of Espoo.

“I’m happy to represent this great club for at least another year. I will give everything once again to achieve our goals, and I hope next year will be even better than this one,” said the defender, currently on holiday in Colombia.

Wearing the Kauno Žalgiris shirt over the past two seasons, Hernandez has made 79 appearances, scoring two goals and providing five assists.
