Estonia’s women’s top flight will start the new season with only six clubs after a series of withdrawals reduced the competition to its smallest line-up in more than a decade.

Since 2015, the Women’s Meistriliiga (Naiste Meistriliiga) consisted of eight clubs, including, at times, a youth selection. Last season, however, FC Ararat dropped out early in the season. Over the winter, Tammeka, Kalev and Tabasalu also pulled out, leaving the league facing a return to numbers last seen in 2014.

Harju Laagri and Paide Linnanaiskond have stepped up to ensure there are six teams, and the Estonian FA has opted for a five-round format so that each side plays 25 games. Clubs reiterated the need for a season that runs throughout the year, with international windows spanning from late February through to early December.
