Estonian national team goalkeeper Matvei Igonen is now in search of a new club after a dramatic turn of events at Bulgarian side Botev Plovdiv. Ahead of the team’s first training session of the new season, club captain Ivelin Popov told reporters that the club is in complete disarray, with uncertainty looming over whether more than five players will remain on the squad.

According to Sportal.bg, several player contracts have already been terminated, and 28-year-old Igonen is among those let go. The Estonian shot-stopper joined Botev Plovdiv in January 2024, starting as the first-choice goalkeeper, but was later replaced in the second half of the season by Danish keeper Hans Christian Bernat.

Over the course of one and a half seasons, Igonen made 17 appearances for Botev. Before that, he played for another Bulgarian side, Hebar, and also had spells abroad with Podbeskidzie in Poland and Lillestrøm SK in Norway. On home soil, he featured for FCI Tallinn and FC Flora, two of Estonia’s top-tier clubs. Internationally, Igonen has earned 17 caps for the Estonian national team.

Adding to the Estonian exodus from Botev Plovdiv, national team defender Joonas Tamm also featured for the club this season but left at the end of the campaign.
