Estonia’s women national team opened their new World Cup qualifying campaign with a 1-3 defeat away to Bosnia and Herzegovina in Zenica on Tuesday.
The hosts went in front on 36 minutes when Marija Milinković met a corner and directed her effort past Katarina Elisabeth Käpp. Estonia responded quickly and were level five minutes later after Karola Purgatsi’ long-range attempt struck an opponent’s arm, with captain Siret Räämet converting the resulting penalty.
Bosnia regained the lead in first-half stoppage time as Ena Šabanagić finished from a tight angle to send the home side in 2-1 at the break. Estonia stayed in the contest until late on, but Andrea Grebenar’s strike in the 88th minute slipped through Käpp’s hands and into the top corner to seal the result.
There was a senior debut for 16-year-old midfielder Anastasija Južaninova, who came on after 67 minutes in place of Katriin Saulus.
Aleksandra Ševoldajeva’s side return to action on Saturday when they face Lithuania in Kaunas. Lithuania play Liechtenstein before that fixture.
