Estonia’s women’s national team closed out their UEFA Nations League campaign on a high note Tuesday evening, earning a hard-fought 1–0 away win over Bulgaria. The decisive goal came in the dying moments of regular time, marking Estonia’s first-ever victory in the competition and securing a second-place finish in their group.
The match began with a solid showing from Estonia, who came closest to scoring in the 14th minute. Midfielder Mari Liis Lillemäe had two bites at goal—her first effort was blocked, while the follow-up flashed narrowly wide. Bulgaria responded just before halftime, capitalizing on a rare Estonian passing error, but goalkeeper Katarina Käpa stood tall to keep the score level.
Momentum shifted dramatically a minute later when Bulgaria were reduced to 10 players. Katriin Saulus was brought down just outside the box, resulting in a straight red card for the home side. Estonia couldn’t convert the ensuing free-kick, but went into the break having shown greater attacking intent, despite being outshot 6–5.
The second half was dominated by Estonia, who controlled possession and territory with composure and patience. Bulgaria, down a player, barely crossed into Estonian territory, although they still managed two late scares—both were expertly handled by Käpa.
The breakthrough came at the perfect moment. In the 90th minute, Loviise Männiste played a smart through ball to an unmarked Kristina Teern, who coolly slotted home the match-winner. Bulgaria nearly equalized deep into stoppage time after being awarded a penalty, but Käpa again came to the rescue, saving the shot with a superb dive to the post.
Estonia finished second in their League C group with four points—earned through Monday’s win and a previous 0–0 draw against Bulgaria. Group winners Israel (3W, 1D) secured promotion to League B, while Bulgaria ended in third with two points.
