Vilnius Žalgiris is entering a new era. Entrepreneur and private investor Tadas Burgaila has become the club’s largest shareholder after, through his controlled legal entity, indirectly acquiring five shares of the public institution Futbolo klubas Žalgiris from former club director Vilma Venslovaitienė and former sporting director Mindaugas Nikoličius.
The financial details of the transaction have not been disclosed.
“It’s a privilege to become part of this community,” said Tadas Burgaila. “I believe Žalgiris can be a modern, open, professional, and inspiring club. I dream of seeing a full national stadium and a team that people live for, celebrate, and take pride in.
To achieve this, we’ll need a new management culture, a smart organization, and international connections that can open wider opportunities – from attracting talent to developing partnerships with foreign clubs. But above all, we must grow public interest and bring more people to the stands. Without supporters, football loses part of its essence.”
According to Burgaila, the future of Žalgiris should be built collectively:
“It’s important to bring together people who care about football – from business, sport, and culture – and to involve Žalgiris fans more closely. Together, we can create a shared strategy, set goals, and develop a long-term vision. The future of Žalgiris should be a unifying idea for the city.”
The new shareholder also expressed gratitude to the club’s previous leadership:
“I sincerely thank Vilma Venslovaitienė and Mindaugas Nikoličius. During their time, the club achieved major successes and gained valuable experience. That’s a strong foundation to build on.”
Vilnius Mayor Valdas Benkunskas welcomed the change, emphasizing that the club holds an important place in the city’s identity:
“Žalgiris is turning a new page. The club is one of Vilnius’s historic symbols and values. With the arrival of a new investor, important changes are ahead. We need to address long-standing issues and meet the expectations of our fans.”
Following the transaction, Tadas Burgaila, through his controlled entity, indirectly owns five shares of the club.
The Vilnius City Municipality and UAB Valoras each retain two shares, while Mindaugas Kasperūnas, Vytautas Čepas, Olego Transportas, and cargoGO Logistics each hold one share. One additional share remains under legal restriction.
A general meeting of Žalgiris shareholders will take place on Monday, November 17, at 16:00, during which proposed amendments to the club’s statutes and the creation of a new representational structure will be discussed.
