# Edgaras Jankauskas departs as a Lithuanian national team manager
**The Lithuanian Football Federation has announced that Edgaras Jankauskas has left his position as head coach of the national team by mutual consent, bringing an end to the 51-year-old’s second spell in charge.**

The decision was announced on Monday evening following Lithuania’s 0-1 Nations League defeat away against Azerbaijan. After the match, Lithuanian Football Federation president Edgaras Stankevičius, technical director Deividas Šemberas and Jankauskas met to evaluate the latest international window, with all parties concluding that a change was needed.

“First of all, I want to thank the coach for his work, dedication and the effort he gave to the Lithuanian national team,” Stankevičius said.

“During almost four years together, there were different periods. We had some really good matches, fought hard against some of the best national teams in Europe, and there were also moments when the results did not meet expectations. However, there was never any doubt about Edgaras dedication to the national team and his desire to achieve the best possible results.

“Today, we evaluated the current situation together and came to the mutual conclusion that the national team needs a change. Decisions like this are never easy in football, especially when we are talking about someone who has given so much of his work and energy to the national team. I thank Edgaras for his professional cooperation, his contribution to Lithuanian football and sincerely wish him success in the next stage of his career.”

Jankauskas also confirmed that the decision had been reached mutually and thanked those who had worked alongside him during his time in charge.

“I want to thank my coaching staff, all the national team players, the staff, the supporters and especially Vyčio Tribūna, as well as the leadership of the Lithuanian Football Federation,” Jankauskas said.

“These four years in charge of the Lithuanian men’s national team were not easy, but I always believed in the team and made every possible effort to achieve the best results. By mutual agreement with the federation’s leadership, we decided today that changes are necessary. I wish the national team and Lithuanian football all the very best and the greatest success.”

Jankauskas entire coaching staff will also leave their positions. The federation has not yet announced who will take charge of Lithuania for their upcoming matches, but confirmed that further information will be provided in the near future.

His departure comes with Lithuania still in the middle of their Nations League campaign. Sunday’s 0-1 defeat away to Azerbaijan left them second in the group with four points from three matches, one point behind Azerbaijan. Lithuania have two matches scheduled for November, including their final Nations League fixture at home against Liechtenstein, as well as a friendly against an opponent yet to be confirmed.

It brings an end to Jankauskas second spell in charge of his country. The former Lithuania international previously led the national team between 2016 and 2018 before returning for a second stint at the beginning of 2023.

His return followed a period of transition after Valdas Ivanauskas left the position in the summer of 2022. Then-Lithuania technical director Reinhold Breu subsequently took interim charge until the end of the year, before Jankauskas returned to the role.

During his second spell in charge, Jankauskas oversaw 38 matches, recording eight victories and nine draws while suffering 21 defeats.
