Early own goal enough for Kalju to give champions their first defeat

In the headline fixture of the second round of the Premium Liiga, champions Flora Tallinn suffered a 0-1 defeat against Nõmme Kalju, with the match decided by an early own goal from Andreas Vaher.

Both sides came into the game after opening the season with victories. Flora had beaten Nõmme United 3-0, while Kalju started with a 1-0 away win over Tartu Tammeka. The two teams had already met earlier this year in the Estonian Super Cup, where Kalju defeated Flora 3-1, and this result gave the visitors another important win over one of their main rivals.

The decisive moment came in the 9th minute. Vaher attempted to play the ball back to goalkeeper Kaur Kivila, but the pass was badly misjudged and ended up in Flora’s own net, handing Kalju an early lead.

Flora controlled more of the possession after falling behind and gradually began to push Kalju deeper into their own half. Much of their attacking threat came down the left side, where Sander Alamaa was one of the liveliest players on the pitch. The young winger repeatedly tried to create openings and was one of Flora’s few consistent attacking sparks throughout the match.

Despite enjoying more of the ball and winning a series of corners, Flora struggled to create clear-cut chances. Rauno Sappinen was kept unusually quiet by a disciplined Kalju defensive line, while goalkeeper Henri Perk dealt confidently with the balls that did come into the box.

Kalju, for their part, focused increasingly on defensive organization after taking the lead. Their back line remained compact and difficult to break down, with the visitors limiting Flora to half-chances rather than genuine scoring opportunities. Even when Flora increased the pressure in the second half, Kalju rarely looked panicked.

The visitors still managed to threaten occasionally on the counterattack. Rommi Siht and Mattias Männilaan both found space in advanced areas, while Oleksandr Musolitin nearly produced a spectacular second goal when his curling effort struck the crossbar in the second half. At the other end, Kivila had to make an important double save to prevent Kalju from extending their lead.

Flora made changes as they chased the equalizer, introducing fresh legs in attack and midfield, but the breakthrough never came. Their best moments came from deliveries into the penalty area and late pressure around the box, yet Kalju defended with composure and commitment until the final whistle.

In the end, Vaher’s own goal remained the only goal of the game as Nõmme Kalju secured a 1-0 victory, while Flora were left frustrated after dominating possession without finding a way through.
