The new Lithuanian Toplyga season began with an early surprise as FC Džiugas Telšiai defeated FK Žalgiris Vilnius 3-2 away from home yesterday. Speaking to Baltic Football News after the match, head coach Andrius Lipskis reflected on what he described as a deserved victory, secured by a stoppage-time winner in a dramatic opening-round encounter.

Ronald Sobowale scored the decisive goal on a counterattack in added time, sealing an intense contest in Vilnius. The forward celebrated emotionally, acknowledging both his teammates and the travelling supporters who remained vocal throughout the match.

“I don’t think we surprised each other tactically,” Lipskis said. “Žalgiris have quality and strong structure. But if we won, it means we were better.”

Žalgiris twice led during the match, but Džiugas remained competitive and ultimately turned the game in their favour. Lipskis admitted there was belief within the squad before kick-off, despite facing one of the title favourites away from home.

“We all felt before the match that we could win,” the 38-year-old coach said. “This year we have players with strong character who want to prove themselves. All week in training we felt that regardless of their status, we could respond.”

According to Lipskis, the key tactical focus was winning individual duels and converting chances.

“I told the team that if we use our chances, we will achieve a positive result.”

The result mirrored a similar upset in 2023, when Džiugas also defeated Žalgiris 3–2 in Vilnius at the start of the season. However, Lipskis dismissed comparisons to past victories.

I never remind the team about what happened in previous rounds or seasons. This is a new page. Every match is different. The most important thing is adapting to the situation.”

Lipskis also acknowledged the impact of Žalgiris forward Liviu Antal, whose pressing caused problems for Džiugas’ defensive line.

“Honestly, I expected us to control the ball more. But Antal had other plans. His pressing was unexpected and made it difficult for us to build positional attacks. I have great respect for him – he is an excellent player.”

Adjustments at halftime proved decisive. Lipskis made defensive corrections that improved organisation in the second half.

“After the break we became more organised defensively. I don’t think Žalgiris underestimated us – they are professionals,” he said. “This result is a clear message to all football lovers about how a top-division team prepares for this league.”

Beyond tactics and preparation, Lipskis also addressed the wider discussion surrounding indoor football in Lithuania. While he did not fully expand on the topic, his message carried weight.

“If some teams are allowed to play indoors until the middle of May, then why can’t we play at our home school stadium in Telšiai, ‘Ateities’?” he asked.

He emphasised that in Telšiai, Džiugas prepare for league matches on snow and ice during the winter months. The point was not presented as an excuse, but as a question of consistency and equal standards across the league. If one team adapts to harsh outdoor conditions, the same principles, in his view, should apply everywhere.

At the same time, Lipskis acknowledged the atmosphere inside the indoor arena in Vilnius. “If the atmosphere is like it was today, I would always agree to play here. Respect to Žalgiris fans for their support, and thank you to our supporters who travelled and were loud throughout. We are happy we could reward them with a victory.”

Despite the significance of the result, Lipskis remained measured in his tone. “I am a simple person. I value honesty and openness. I understand the situation and where we are coming from. I live with the dream that football in Lithuania will continue to grow.”

Before leaving, the coach sent a message to Džiugas supporters: “When we are together, we are strong. Support us – and if necessary, criticise us too.”

Džiugas begin the new season with three points and a statement victory, while Žalgiris are left to regroup after an unexpected opening-round defeat. Džiugas in their next league match will play against Hegelmann on 28th of February in Marijampole.
