Lithuanian midfielder Domantas Šimkus is set for a new chapter in his football career as he will join Hamrun Spartans, the reigning champions of the Maltese Premier League. The 29-year-old, who has spent the past two seasons with FA Šiauliai, made 14 appearances and scored once in the ongoing A Lyga campaign before sealing the move.

Hamrun Spartans president Joseph Portelli confirmed the signing during the club’s annual general meeting on Thursday, adding an experienced and versatile presence to the squad’s midfield ahead of a busy summer schedule.

Šimkus brings with him a wealth of international and club experience. He has earned 30 caps for the Lithuanian national team, with his most recent appearance coming in March 2023. Over the years, he has built a solid career both domestically and abroad. In Lithuania, he featured for FK Atlantas and FK Žalgiris, winning the A Lyga title with the latter in 2020.

His time outside Lithuania includes spells with Hapoel Kfar Saba in Israel, FK Sabail in Azerbaijan, and NS Mura in Slovenia, showcasing his adaptability in various European leagues.

Now, Šimkus joins a Hamrun Spartans side that is not only dominant in domestic competition but also increasingly ambitious on the European stage. The club secured its third consecutive league title last season and will enter the UEFA Champions League first qualifying round in July. In the 2022/23 season, the Spartans made a strong run in the UEFA Europa Conference League, reaching the play-off qualifying round before falling to Serbian giants Partizan Belgrade 7–4 on aggregate.
