Lithuanian midfielder Domantas Šimkus has changed clubs in Malta, joining Marsaxlokk FC after spending the first half of the season with Ħamrun Spartans.
The 29-year-old moved to Malta last summer after two years with FA Šiauliai, signing for Maltese champions Ħamrun Spartans. During his time with the club, Šimkus played a part in Maltese football history, as Ħamrun became the first club from Malta to reach the league phase of a European competition, qualifying for the UEFA Conference League phase after beating FC RFS in the play-off round. In that historic campaign, Ħamrun collected three points from six matches, with the only points coming from a memorable victory over Lincoln Red Imps.
In total, Šimkus made 24 appearances during the first half of the season for Ħamrun, including ten matches in European competitions. Most of his appearances came as a substitute.
Marsaxlokk FC announced today that they have signed Šimkus on a contract running until the end of the current season. With the Maltese league splitting into two phases, Marsaxlokk currently sit fifth in the standings with 21 points, 11 points behind leaders Floriana.
Over the course of his career, Šimkus has earned 31 caps for the Lithuanian national team. At club level, he has represented FK Žalgiris Vilnius, FK Atlantas and FA Šiauliai in Lithuania, while also gaining international experience abroad with Hapoel Kfar Saba in Israel, FK Sabail in Azerbaijan, NS Mura in Slovenia, in addition to his spell in Malta.
