BFC Daugavpils defender Aleksejs Kudeļkins is set to test himself abroad for the first time in his career after joining Romanian second-division side Metalul Buzău.

The 23-year-old centre-back has spent his entire professional career with Daugavpils, making his Virslīga debut back in 2020 at just 18 years of age. Since then, Kudeļkins has gone on to become a mainstay in the club’s defence, amassing 122 league appearances and scoring two goals.

During the most recent Virslīga season, Kudeļkins featured in 29 matches, finding the net once and being handed the captain’s armband on several occasions. His consistent performances also earned him regular involvement with Latvia’s U-21 national football team, for whom he has made 12 appearances.

Now, the defender takes the next step in his career by moving to Romania. Metalul Buzău, based in southeastern Romania, compete in Liga II and have never played in the country’s top flight. After 17 matches this season, the club sit ninth in the table with 29 points in a 22-team league.

Kudeļkins could make his debut for his new club as early as tomorrow, when Metalul Buzău host fellow Liga II side Sepsi OSK in cup competition.
